Queerly Complex

I am happy to announce that I’ve been invited to join the blog hub known as “Queerly Complex,” the brainchild of one Jason W. I was shocked and flattered to find out that two friends and community collaborators have been reading my blog. Then I was more shocked and flattered to receive this invitation.

In honor of the party and the launch of Queerly Complex I thought I would make a gift- I work best when I have a cause and this is amazingly both about furthering my own work and that of someone I respect and admire.  But what to make? I racked my brain thinking of something that could be inexpensive, worth keeping, and somehow related to the event. . .

And then it hit me, in a flash of genius that I’m sure won’t be appreciated by anyone else as much as myself- Bookmarks!

They’re easy to stencil, They’re useful (and more than likely if someone is looking for something they’ll pick up anything; including a bookmark that I made that promotes the site!)

I created one stencil using the header of Queerly Complex

I wanted another layer with a graphic and I stumbled across the symbols for the planets. I’m going to be honest, trying to find images that I feel comfortable using can be a challenge. I think symbolism walks the line of cultural appropriation a lot of the times. While Buddhist symbols might be recognizable to many, I don’t think I have the right to use it in my art. I should find something more genuine (let’s save the queer theory debate about what “Genuine” is for another blog entry).

Anyway, I love astronomy, and there’s something beautifully complex about the universe. I find it most complex because it’s so seemingly simple. 117 elements create all the matter of the universe. It’s Queerly Complex in it’s own way. I was also drawn to the symbols because who knew that Mars and Venus are the symbols for “male” and “female.” It made me feel like the other planetary symbols were the other variations of gender that are often left out of the conversation.

So I stenciled the two layers and voila!

And did I mention the height of my creative genius?

Get it? You bookmark our page (the blog roll) and we’ll bookmark yours (the bookmark itself). . . ha ha.

You’ll get one if you come to the party- so be sure to RSVP!

  1. If I had a dollar for each time I came to… Incredible article!
